What makes a t-shirt mockup actually sell
Show the shirt colour you sell most. A design that pops on white can vanish on black, and vice versa. If you offer both, export both — buyers filter by colour before they read anything.
Flat lay reads cleanest for the main listing image. Hung and folded shots are better as second and third images, where they add texture and scale. Model shots convert well but are the hardest thing to get free.
Keep the design inside a realistic print area. A graphic that runs shoulder to shoulder in the mockup and then prints 12 inches wide is the fastest route to a refund request. Check the print area of the blank you are actually ordering.
Do you need a PSD mockup at all?
Only for control. A PSD with a smart object lets you warp artwork to fabric folds and blend it with the shirt’s own shadows, which is why agencies still use them. For a marketplace listing, a generator that already handles the perspective and lighting gets you 90% of the way in about 1% of the time. How do I make a t-shirt mockup without Photoshop?
Use a browser generator instead of a PSD file. Open a t-shirt mockup generator, upload your design as a PNG with a transparent background, position it inside the print area, and download the composited image. That takes under a minute and needs no software. If you specifically need to open a .psd mockup file someone sent you, Photopea is a free browser editor that supports PSD smart objects, which is the only part of the Photoshop workflow a mockup file really uses.
What resolution should a t-shirt mockup be for Etsy?
Etsy listing images are screen images, so aspect ratio and pixel size are what matter — a square around 2,000px is a safe target, and DPI is irrelevant for them. That is a different number from your print file, which needs 300 DPI at the blank’s actual print area. Mixing the two up is the most common sizing mistake in print-on-demand; the size cheatsheet on this site lists the current figures for each platform with links to the official sources.
Can I use a free t-shirt mockup in a paid ad?
Check the specific tool’s licence, because they differ sharply. Printful and Printify both state their free mockups can be used in ads and marketing. freemockup.app licenses exports for commercial use. Mockey.ai’s free plan is personal-use only, so a paid ad would need a paid plan there. Placeit’s free templates and Canva’s Pro assets each have their own terms. The licence, not the file, is what gets you in trouble.
Why do my mockups look fake?
Usually because the design sits flat on the fabric with no shadow or fold interaction, or because it is too large and too centred. Good mockups pick up the garment’s own shading, sit slightly off dead-centre the way a real print does, and keep to a plausible print width — roughly 10 to 12 inches on an adult tee. A dark design on a dark shirt with no highlight blending is the other giveaway, which is why it is worth exporting on the shirt colour you actually sell.
