Black is a printing decision, not a colour choice
Almost every technical difficulty in garment printing shows up on black cotton first, which is why it deserves its own page.
Colour ink needs a white layer underneath
Ink is translucent. Printed straight onto black cotton, a red goes brown and a yellow disappears. Direct-to-garment and screen printing both solve this by laying a white underbase first, then the colours on top. That extra layer is why a full-colour print on black feels slightly stiffer than the same design on white.
Registration errors show as a white halo
If the colour layer shifts even slightly against the underbase, a thin white line appears along one edge of the design. On a white shirt nobody would notice. On black it's the first thing you see. Designs with heavy outlines hide it; designs built from delicate multi-colour shapes do not.
One-colour white is the safe bet
A single white print on black needs no underbase, has no registration to misalign, stays soft on the fabric and gives you the highest contrast available on the garment. It's why so much black merch is white-on-black — not a lack of imagination, but the printing method telling you what it does best.
