“Free” means something different at every one of these tools. Some hand you unlimited high-resolution files and only want an email address; some cap you at three low-resolution JPGs a day; one is really a subscription with a free sampler attached. Here is what each free tier actually gives you.
How this list is ranked. Ranked by how much usable output you get without paying — factoring in resolution, watermarks, licence, and how much of a signup wall stands in the way. The biggest library here, and the only one wrapped in a full design editor — useful when the mockup is one layer of a bigger graphic. Smartmockups, which used to be the standalone leader in this category, shut down in September 2024 and its templates were folded in here; smartmockups.com now redirects to Canva. Photopea is a free browser-based editor with real PSD and smart-object support, which means the thousands of free .psd mockup files floating around the web become usable without a Photoshop licence. What actually separates these tools
Three things decide which one you should open, and none of them is template count.
Signup friction. Two tools here (freemockup.app and Photopea) need no account at all. The print-on-demand generators need a free account but nothing more. Everything else wants a login before you see an export.
What the free file is licensed for. Mockey’s free plan is explicitly personal-use; Printful and Printify both clear their free mockups for your own listings and ads. That difference matters more than resolution if you are selling.
Screen image or print file. Every tool on this list produces a screen image — a listing photo, an ad, a social post. None of them produces your print file. If you need 300 DPI artwork for a physical print run, that comes out of your design tool, not a mockup generator. Our mockup size cheatsheet lists the current numbers for both, with sources.
Two tools that older lists still recommend — don’t
Smartmockups closed on 27 September 2024. Its templates live on inside Canva, and the old domain redirects there, but accounts and saved projects did not survive. Lists that still rank it as a standalone product have not been rechecked since 2024.
Screely, the browser-window screenshot framer, no longer exists at its old domain — as of this check, screely.com serves an unrelated gambling site. Do not send screenshots to it.

Which free mockup generator has no watermark and no signup?
freemockup.app is the only tool in this comparison that asks for neither. It runs entirely in your browser — your artwork is composited on your own machine and never uploaded — and exports a clean PNG with no watermark and no account. The trade-off is resolution: exports cap at 1,200px on the long edge, which is sized for a marketplace listing or a social post rather than a print file. Mockey.ai also exports without a watermark, but requires an account and limits you to three low-resolution JPGs a day for personal use only.
Are free mockups allowed for commercial use on Etsy or Shopify?
It depends entirely on the tool, and this is the detail most lists skip. Printful and Printify both state their free mockups can be used in your listings, ads and marketing. freemockup.app licenses its exports for commercial use. Mockey.ai’s free plan is personal-use only — commercial listings need a paid plan there. Placeit’s free sampler and Canva’s Pro-marked assets each carry their own terms. Check the licence before a product launch, not after.
Can any of these produce a 300 DPI print file?
No, and that is a category confusion worth clearing up. A mockup is a picture of your design on a product — it is meant to be looked at on a screen, so pixel dimensions and aspect ratio are what matter. Your print file is a separate export from your design tool at the product’s print size and 300 DPI. Printful and Printify hand you high-resolution mockups, but those are still promotional images, not the artwork that gets printed.
Is Placeit free?
Not in any practical sense. Placeit keeps a rotating set of roughly 250 free templates that download at full resolution, and it is a genuinely good catalogue — but everything outside that set comes out watermarked until you subscribe, at $14.95 a month or $89.69 a year. If you want the model photography and video that Placeit is known for, budget for the subscription; if you want a free workflow you can rely on week to week, start higher up this list.
What happened to Smartmockups?
Canva acquired Smartmockups in 2021 and closed it on 27 September 2024. Part of the template library was absorbed into Canva as Canva Mockups, but user accounts and saved projects were not migrated, and smartmockups.com now redirects to Canva. If you landed here from an older “best mockup tools” list that still ranks Smartmockups as a standalone product, that list predates the shutdown.
